Sugar Free Cocktails for Cinco de Mayo

Cocktails and Mocktails

All free of added sugar!

I have challenged you this week to Slash Sugar. But its Cinco de Mayo… most of us want a celebratory drink, a Margarita! Unfortunately, most people make it with added sugar (either refined sugar or agave). This is actually a total disservice to the margarita and completely unnecessary.

While the margarita is the signature cocktail of this holiday, I often want something lighter or different that is just as festive. I am giving you 3 festive cocktails to celebrate this holiday and 1 perfect mocktail, if you want to skip the booze.

Classic Margarita

My parents lived in the mountains of Mexico before I was born and learned the art of the perfect Classic Margarita.

Once you have one of these, you won’t go back to mixes and you will be telling bartenders how to make them! Yep, every time we go to a restaurant, my husband has me tell the waitress or bartender how to make one. He won’t take a risk on theirs. Ha.

While this recipe has no added sugar, it does contain sugar from the Cointreau used in this drink.

This has been my go to drink for a couple of years now. While I love the Classic Margarita, I usually want something lighter and truly sugar free.

A Ranch Water is the perfect drink for those that want a margarita without any sugar at all and want less alcohol. I top this with Topo Chico and usually increase the amount so my drink will last longer, contains less alcohol, and I can have more of them. Win, win!

If you don’t have Topo Chico, club soda will do but I promise you are missing out.

This drink is completely sugar free.

Ranch Water has been my go to cocktail but sometimes I just want a break from all that lime. The Paloma Spritzer, made with grapefruit juice, has been that perfect combination for me. I call it a Spritzer because I tend to add more Topo Chico then most. I do this so my drink is lighter and more refreshing for this Houston heat! Plus it lets me enjoy my drink longer with less alcohol and in turn, I can have more of them.

If you don’t have Topo Chico, you can use club soda like I mentioned above. Also feel free to use less if you want a stronger beverage.

This drink has no sugar other than natural sugars in grapefruit juice.

While I am a huge fan of tequila, its the only liquor I drink, I don’t drink that often any more. But just because I am not drinking, doesn’t mean I don’t want to feel like I am part of the party. Plus, I drink water all day… I want something different by the time the evening comes around.

This Paloma Mocktail has become my favorite 5:00 pm drink of choice lately. I feel like I am having a cocktail but not having any of the alcohol and no sugar… win win!

This drink has no sugar other than natural sugars in grapefruit juice.

Note - when using tequila, always use 100% agave.

I prefer a silver tequila but that’s just my preference. My go to tequilas are Don Julio Blanco and Casamigos. I have also recently gotten into Mezcal, which you can easily replace the tequila with for a more smoky flavor. My favorite is Casamigos, the black bottle.

What’s your favorite drink for Cinco de Mayo? Let me know below. If it isn’t listed here, I may just give it a try.

Stay safe, healthy and happy!
